The movie Dance Subaru is an inspiring film to watch. Firstly, we were all afraid to take the front row as we are afraid of neck cramps in the midst of the film. Dare-devils Iris and I stood up to the challenge. Oh well, I guess I didnt want to wait for another time to watch it since I was already there and the next movie screening is 9.45pm. Way too late for a slumber-lover like me. Thus, I was glad, almost grateful that Iris decided to watch it with me. Yuen yin and Want ting waited for us during the movie screening. Our front seats were comfortable with adequate leg-room space and the screen was further than we thought. Good. Now the movie.
What I like about the movie was that they have sections like Prelude, Act 1, Act 2, Act 3..as though you were watching a ballet. Then, the black stray kitten(eventually grows into a cat), was the catalyst that spurred the plot on, linking each scene seamlessly together. It was also mentioned how Subaru(using first person narration) was just like the stray cat. The kitten brought Subaru when she was young, to the glass doors of the studio where dancers practised. It brought her to the Carabet's owner, where she was given a chance to shine(even though it was a stage meant to entertain silly drunkards). In other words, the cat's part in the movie is one that of great importance. Subaru's talent in dancing was spotted by a few since young. The desire to dance for Kazama(twin brother who passed away due to hereditary disease) fires the inner passion that Subaru has for dance. Strong-willed and determined, Subaru sets off to her journey of dance(uncertainties, back stabbing by friends). The aunt, who is the carabet's owner, told Subaru that her fear of death before each major event gives her the feeling of re-birth when she got over it and stepped onto the stage. She danced with liberation because she was no longer dancing for anyone, but for herself. The almost predictable plot, with some tear stinging moments, worked well with great directing skills. I love how the lights and the camera-angles went whenever Subaru is dancing. A spine-chilling feeling. Perhaps only those who knows how it feels like to be on stage performing when all eyes are set on you, will truely enjoy this movie(: Another Jap movie that I love. Waiting for the next dance movie!!
